Leading Remote Teams

The Need

Many global organizations need to ensure 24/7 customer service. This means they must significantly alter the way they work by harnessing the power and creativity of teams around the world. The challenge shared by many global companies is, “how do I lead and influence team members who are remotely located?” Another challenge was how to help remote team members feel actively involved with their geographically dispersed teams – and not just like “a server churning out data on request.”

Our client was a global provider of practical applications for advanced technologies. After consolidating their IT services from a number of divisions into one integrated but global department, they found that 50% of their managers and staff were located in 10 regional offices, while the other 50% were in 80 different locations across the world. This presented the team leaders with the usual challenges of communicating across time zones and cultures, engaging remote team members and building a sense of “team.”

The Piñon Group Approach

We developed a blended approach to their problems that included accelerated learning techniques, virtual sessions and off-line activities that helped participants both understand and identify practical solutions to engage their remote team members. Our approach focused on the unique leadership skills required to get the best from people in a remote situation, and stressed innovative ideas, such as virtual coffee breaks.  It included simple techniques for remote team building and teamwork that were immediately applicable.

What the Clients Said . . .

”This session was great, especially learning about the six golden rules, particularly communication and trust. It provided very valuable insight into the different cultures we deal with and how they might expect to have us communicate with them now that I have a template to use when working with others from different cultures and work style.”

Client Services Director

“Leading Remote Teams is a big part of my job. This session helped me really focus upon my role and responsibility in engaging my remote team members. The simulations you designed drove home these messages and the discussions we had enabled me to pull out some practical solutions in a short space of time. You did a great job of engaging us and getting us to open our minds to the possibilities.”
