Executive Development at Leading Shipping Company
The Need
Our client wanted an external organization to develop a competency model. Their ultimate goal was to create an Executive Lead Institute that would provide an accelerated program for future senior executives. The program needed to reflect the company’s culture, offer a range of development activities over a period of time to build capability, and be flexible to adjust to their rapidly changing environment.
The Piñon Group Approach
We chose a “learner centered” and tailored approach, clearly linked to the strategic intent of the business. Using a System Mapping® process with the executive team, we charted the company’s culture while mapping future issues facing the business. The competency model we designed from this information linked key executive behaviors to future strategy. We created an on-line 360-survey tool and a blended, modular development program that included an assessment event, experiential-based learning, and tailored case studies. To guarantee credits for those going through the program, we cooperated with a leading university. For six months after the program, participants were coached to develop their capabilities. This program received the President’s Award, was featured at the 2002 ASTD Conference in New Orleans and received a citation for Advanced Workplace Learning and Performance from the ASTD at their International Conference in Washington.
