Global Leadership Development Program

The Need

With the growth in demand for smart phones, our client, a global handset manufacturer, needed to grow the capability of their leaders to support its global expansion. We designed the program to be an integral part of the talent management process to help managers move from in country positions to more senior global roles. This required them to expand their mindsets and thinking skills as well as their ability to communicate effectively across cultural divides.

The Piñon Group Approach

We tailored our learner-centered approach to link the program to the strategic intent of the business while immersing the participants in a total experience that allowed them to experiment in leading and addressing broader business issues. The entire 12-month program was driven by each individual’s Personal Development Plan that was agreed with their sponsoring manager and based upon a customized assessment. This identified their key attributes and the core skills required to transition to a more global role.

The program comprised of three key parts: three 4-day modules (in China, USA and Europe) designed to introduce more strategic elements and create opportunities for dialogue around broader cross-cultural and business issues.

The second part was an Action Learning Project. Working in cross-functional and globally diverse teams, with a corporate sponsor, each team used a systems thinking approach to identify a company-wide problem. They then spent 9 months researching and taking action to address the issue. This culminated in a presentation to an executive group during the final module.

The third part of the program was 12 coaching sessions designed to help the individual prepare for their next role. After twelve months we conducted an Authentic Assessment process where we collected qualitative and quantitative feedback on each individual. This formed the basis of their final coaching session and prepared them for their next set of objectives.

What the Client Said . . .

“This program aligned well with our strong brand identity and accelerated our ability to promote exceptional individuals to key global roles. Almost half the participants were promoted during the program and were well prepared for the challenges of leading a global organization. The program has been a great success and we look forward to expanding its role in growing the capability of our organization.”
