The Consultant and the Balloonist

At the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta one of the hot-air balloonists had drifted far off course. He saw a lone man on the ground, so he lowered the balloon and said, “Excuse me, I seem to be lost. Can you tell me where I am?”

“Yes,” the man said. “You’re in a balloon, at an altitude of 50 ft and positioned just north of Albuquerque, New Mexico.”

The balloonist nodded slowly, still looking confused, then replied, “You must be a management consultant.”

“How did you know that?”

“What you told me is accurate, but of absolutely no use to me,” said the balloonist. “I’m still lost. Thanks a lot!”

The consultant considered this for a moment, then said, “And I’m guessing that you must be in senior management.”

The balloonist nodded. “Yes I am, but how did you know that?”

“Easy really,” said the consultant. “You don’t know where you are or where you’re going, but you expect me to help. Yet you’re in the same position you were in before we met, and now it’s my fault!”
